This past weekend members of our executive board traveled to Chicago to participate in our region’s Carlson Leadership Academy. We headed North mid-day Friday to meet with the hundreds of brothers from chapters throughout the Midwest with the common goal of learning from each other for the betterment of our chapters.
Carlson provides education for each specific executive officer position, as well as strategic planning and goal-setting for effective chapter leadership. The programming emphasizes the use of each officer’s individual strengths to build a complete team. Participants spend time on chapter analysis, large and small group sessions, and informal interactions with other chapters. Participants will enhance their skill sets and leadership abilities to help them as chapter officers, in other leadership roles, in group projects and, eventually, in the workforce for the rest of their lives.
This year we not only brought executive board members, but a “rising leader”, Mr. Richard Beck. Ricky was chosen as one of 60 SigEp’s nationwide to be a Hickman Scholar. Hickman scholars are brothers who haven’t been to Carlson and don’t hold an officer position but through their application displayed a true desire to step up and make an impact at their chapter.
This weekend we learned many new skills and practices that were laid out to us by our facilitators during our breakout sessions, as well as many new things we wish to implement that we found out about by simply talking to brothers from other chapters and asking about how they operate. Overall the weekend was an immensely insightful experience to get to see the national aspect of the fraternity and speak to brothers and alumni from across the mid west.
